Information for Guests & What to bring

Information for SUMDUM Guests

Most everything you will need is provided aboard SUMDUM, but following are some personal items you may want to bring, especially if you plan to go ashore. Temperature ranges from 45ºF to 70ºF and you should plan on some rain during your trip. Please use duffel or canvas bags that can be stuffed in the bottom of a closet, since closet and drawer space in staterooms is quite limited. Empty suitcases are difficult to store.

Clothing

  • Footwear:
While aboard: a pair of comfortable deck shoes, loafers or tennis shoes with non-marking soles, or something similar is recommended – Crocs work great for this. For going ashore it is strongly recommended that you do not bring hiking boots. Rather, we will provide a pair of waterproof, knee high boots to use during your charter (please specify size on the guest preference sheet). Should you prefer to purchase a pair, rather than use what is aboard, you can order them from Tongass Trading Company (800-235-5102). They are offered in men’s sizes only, sizes 3 and up and come in a 16” or a 13 ½” top. Insoles are also available for a better fit. The brand name is “Xtra-Tuf”.
  • Clothing: cotton or wool shirts, trousers or jeans and fleece sweaters with a light windbreaker are usually sufficient. Long underwear is generally not necessary; however some people like lightweight silk or polypro layers under their outerwear.
  • Raingear and outerwear: a coat with a hood and pants out of a breathable, waterproof material (such as Gore-Tex) is suggested.
  • Swim and summer wear: swimsuits are suggested for the hot tub and days are sometimes warm enough for a pair of shorts while fishing.

Toilet Articles

  • Hairdryers are provided on board as well as bath towels and hand soap. You should bring personal soaps and shampoos.

Fishing Gear

  • Salt-water tackle is on board along with spinning rods for fresh water. You should bring fly-fishing equipment if desired or any special lures. Fishing licenses are provided on board.

Other

  • SUMDUM has a great library but you may want to bring reading material for spare time and cameras too. Several pairs of binoculars are available as well as a IPOD input, CD player, DVD and VHS video player if you want to bring any special tapes or discs.
  • Captain Bob Widness’ cell phone number is (907) 617-6814

Travel Arrangements

  • Flight reservations and hotel accommodations are the responsibility of our guests and should be made as soon as possible, as Alaska’s summer season is quite busy. Alaska Airlines (800) 252-7522 and Delta Airlines (800)221-1212 are the primary carriers.
  • Suggested Hotels:
In Ketchikan: West Coast Cape Fox Lodge (907) 225-8001 toll free  (866) 225-8001
In Juneau: Baranoff Hotel (907) 586-2660
    In Sitka: Westmark (907) 747-6241
  • Ground transportation: One van pick up and one delivery per charter is provided. We can suggest ground transportation alternatives in Alaska’s ports. Please call Bob (907) 617-6814 for further information.
  • Float planes can be arranged for flight seeing and fly in fishing. A float plane can also be arranged to transport directly to or from the Sumdum for guests with a limited schedule.

Communications

  • A cellular phone is provided aboard SUMDUM for both outgoing and incoming calls. The cell phone number is (907)617-6814. Please note that while the phone is activated at all times, certain cruising areas where SUMDUM travels cannot receive a signal. A satellite phone is also available for use (ask Capt. Bob about details). Internet is only available through cellular service.
